What does POWER7 even mean?
POWERx is IBM’s processor technology. POWER7 is the latest generation and, per IBM, is the fastest chip in the world.
OK, what does POWER7 mean to me?
POWER7 is the ideal platform for running UNIX, AIX, IBM i or Linux applications. And while the processor is fast, the real benefit is in reduced operating cost. More specifically through less power consumption and the ability to reduce complexity with virtualization technology.
Quick Highlights:
· POWER7 delivers more performance per core and outstanding energy efficiency; enabling users to get 4-5 times the system capacity in the same physical space while consuming the same amount of energy. So, total energy consumption can be cut by 75 percent.
· Virtualization with PowerVM enables industrial strength consolidation of database and application workloads, with up to 1,000 partitions on POWER7 systems. PowerVM Live Partition Mobility helps eliminate outages for scheduled system maintenance.
· PowerHA System Mirror is the IBM Power Systems premier HA/DR solution for both the data center and multi-site configurations. Clients world wide use PowerHA to minimize planned and unplanned downtime as well as to address increasingly rigorous compliance requirements for disaster recovery and data retrieval.
· IBM Systems Director and VMControl enable users to manage their applications across system pools, managing physical and virtual servers, networks and storage from a single interface. This enables them to lower administration costs and improve service.
· Companies can choose from thousands of applications on AIX, IBM i and Linux environments that run on Power Systems, with easy deployment on POWER7 without any application changes.
